HER FaRTHEST NORTH
a novel

Henrietta Thurlow, sole heir to a maritime family fortune, becomes the second woman in America to receive a Ph.D. in geology. After the Russian Navy finds new land off the north coast of Siberia in 1913, “Hetty” launches a scientific expedition to explore this mysterious frozen archipelago. She then finds and lays claim to an uncharted volcanic island located far out in the Arctic Ocean. It becomes the closest known land mass to the geographic North Pole. When Hetty fails to return, the newspapers proclaim her the "Lost Lady of the Arctic". Yet she survives the polar winter only to have the men of science refuse to acknowledge the discoveries of a female explorer.

MY Story

Robert Faubel

The Cold! My characters relish it and so do I. The polar regions of our planet are a rich source of fiction, which have not been fully explored by writers. I've known this ever since I was scared silly by the 1951 scf-fi thriller The Thing From Another Plant.

When I go camping along the Arctic Ocean at 25 Below Zero, it motivates me to write tales about the Heroic Age of Polar Exploration. My early 20th Century historical-adventure novel, Her Farthest North, is based upon these frigid inspirations.

I am a trained historian with an M.A. in history, who divides his time between arctic Alaska and summers in my native New England. While living among the Inupiat and Siberian Yupik of Utqiagvik and Saint Lawrence Island, I learned much from these unique inhabitants of the far north. Many of their stories and myths have been incorporated into my historical fiction.

My research has focused upon the "Heroic Age of Polar Exploration." Yet, during  this historical period between 1840-1930, the contributions of women  have been underrepresented.

In 2019, I completed a Certificate in Novel Writing from Stanford University, while working on my book Her Farthest North. All of

my protagionists are spirited young women who bravely face the challenges of the "Great Cold".

Her Farthest North received the 2022 New Voices Adventure Writing Prize from the Wilbur Smith Foundation (UK)

I am now researching my next historical novel. It will focus on a group of women aviators who fly non-stop across Antarctica during the 1930's.

Camping along the wild coastline of the Arctic Ocean and on the high glaciers of the Alaska Range has become my passion. I am a gourmet cook of many dishes, including the caribou, walrus and whale graciously provided by my Inupiat friends.
